Most published reports describe experiments in rodents rather than in people. These studies examine outcomes in tendons, ligaments, bone, stomach lining, and intestinal tissue. In rat and mouse models, a frequently reported effect is faster healing or reduced damage. Sample sizes are usually small, and a substantial share of the work originates from a small number of research groups. Independent replication is limited, so how far the findings extend to humans remains an open question.
Proposed mechanisms in the literature involve the nitric oxide system, vascular endothelial growth factor signaling, and epidermal growth factor receptor pathways. Some studies report changes in blood vessel formation or in inflammatory mediators, while others describe interactions with nervous tissue. Much of this evidence rests on molecular markers in cultured cells or animal models. Whether the same pathways operate the same way in humans has not been established. Authors therefore tend to describe mechanisms as hypothetical rather than settled.
Direct human evidence is scarce. One trial in ulcerative colitis delivered the compound by enema and produced limited publicly reported results without a clear benefit. The compound is not an approved medicine in most jurisdictions. In many markets it is sold as a research chemical; in others it falls under prescription or controlled categories. Regulators have not confirmed any claimed medical use, and product labels rarely undergo premarket review.
The main chemical liabilities of this sequence are peptide-bond hydrolysis and possible aspartate-related reactions, since the peptide contains aspartic acid residues but no cysteine, methionine, or tryptophan. Absence of those three residues removes the most common oxidation and disulfide pathways from consideration. Studies of related peptides indicate that aspartate isomerisation and aspartimide formation occur most readily at Asp-Gly and Asp-Ala positions, and open questions remain about how quickly those reactions proceed under ordinary laboratory conditions. Storage guidance typically emphasises cool, dry, dark conditions to slow hydrolysis.
Identity and purity are usually assessed with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often paired with mass spectrometry using electrospray or MALDI ionisation. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping by enzymatic digestion provide additional sequence-level confirmation. Purity is commonly reported as an area percentage from a chromatographic trace, and water content can be measured by Karl Fischer titration. Reported masses may differ by tens of daltons between sources because preparations can contain acetate or trifluoroacetate counterions, and such differences are not by themselves evidence of a different peptide.

Within the research literature, the peptide is discussed through several provisional mechanisms, including cytoprotection, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interaction with the nitric oxide system. None of these mechanisms is fully characterized, and no single pathway is universally accepted. Review articles typically note the gap between consistent animal findings and sparse human evidence. The compound is classified as a research chemical rather than an approved pharmaceutical, which shapes how studies are designed, funded, and reported.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, corresponding to a partial fragment of a larger protein detected in human gastric juice. The name derives from the parent protein designation BPC, an abbreviation of body protection compound, with 157 acting as a fraction or batch identifier used by the original investigators. Its molecular weight is approximately 1419 daltons, and the chain contains no unusual residues or disulfide bridges. In the literature it is described as a short, water-soluble fragment rather than a complete natural protein.
Most early work on this peptide originated in the 1990s from a research group in Zagreb, Croatia, relying on animal models and cell cultures. Reported observations included effects on gastrointestinal lesion healing, tendon fibroblast migration, and blood vessel formation under controlled laboratory conditions. These findings come predominantly from rodent studies and in vitro assays rather than from human trials. Controlled human data remain limited, and the degree to which animal results translate to human physiology is an open question rather than a settled fact.
Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the activity observed in animal models. The most frequently cited involve signaling through vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and modulation of the nitric oxide system. Researchers have also described interactions with protective pathways in the gut lining. These proposed mechanisms appear in the literature as hypotheses supported by preclinical observations, not as confirmed pathways in humans. The precise way the peptide produces its reported effects, and whether those effects carry across species, remain areas of active and unresolved investigation.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide, meaning it consists of fifteen amino acids joined in a single chain. Its sequence is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val, a fragment corresponding to part of a larger protein found in human gastric juice. The peptide was first described in the 1990s by researchers in Zagreb who were studying gastric protective factors. It is not a naturally circulating hormone; it is a laboratory-made fragment derived from a stomach protein. The name is an abbreviation of body protection compound, with the number referring to the fragment's position in the source protein.
Most published findings come from rodent experiments using induced injury or surgical models. Human reports remain scarce and are largely observational, which limits how much can be stated with confidence. Questions about absorption, distribution, metabolism, and clearance in people are still open. Dose translation between species is likewise unresolved. Researchers tend to read the animal literature as a starting point rather than a settled account.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acids. Its sequence corresponds to part of a protein found in human gastric juice, which is the origin of the "body protection compound" label. In laboratory work the material is treated as a defined research chemical rather than a finished product. Published research has centered on animal models, and the peptide is not an approved medicine in most countries.
The peptide was first described in the early 1990s by a group studying gastric secretions and tissue repair. Its fifteen-residue chain is usually written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV in single-letter code. The free peptide has the formula C62H98N16O22 and a theoretical mass near 1419.5 daltons. These identifiers are established chemical facts that can be checked against standard peptide databases. There is no ambiguity about the primary structure.
=== Genetic === OSA also appears to have a genetic component; those with a family history of it are more likely to develop it themselves. This could be the result of both direct genetic contributions to OSA susceptibility. Or it could be from indirect contributions via 'intermediate' phenotypes such as obesity, craniofacial structure, neurological control of upper airway muscles, and of sleep and circadian rhythm sleep problems. Several genes connected with sleep apnea have been identified, including DLEU1, DLEU7 CTSF, MSRB3, FTO, and TRIM66.
The release of the Model 370A DNA Sequencing System, using fluorescent tags, revolutionized gene discovery. The Model 340A Nucleic Acid Extractor became used in medical labs to isolate DNA from bacteria, blood, and tissue. In 1987, Sam Eletr resigned for health reasons. Revenues increase by 63% to nearly US$85 million, with 788 employees, and another six new instruments. Applied Biosystems acquired the Kratos Division of Spectros International PLC. By 1988, the product line had increased to over 25 different automated instruments, over 400 liquid chromatography columns and components, and about 320 chemicals, biochemicals, and consumables. Sales revenue grew to over US$132 million, with almost 1000 employees in eight countries. In that year for the first time, genetic science reached the milestone of being able to identify individuals by their DNA. In 1989, sales revenue reached nearly $160 million. Applied Biosystems maintained 15 offices in 9 different countries, and introduced four new products. The company developed enzyme-based reagent kits made by Promega Corporation, and in the new field of bioinformatics, licensed with TRW Inc. Also, joint marketing began with Perkin-Elmer Corporation and Cetus Corporation (formerly of instruments and reagents for DNA replication, the fastest growing segment in biotechnology. In 1990, instrument sales underwent a cyclical slowdown, as the economy entered the 1990–91 recession. For the first year, Applied revenues did not grow, and came in at less than $159 million, with 1,334 employees.
She also describes the legislation as a "slippery slope towards death on demand". 24 November – Alex Cole-Hamilton, the leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats says his party will vote down the Scottish Government's upcoming budget if it contains even a "penny" promoting Scottish independence. 25 November – In an attempt to reassure industry there will not be further tax rises for business, Chancellor Rachel Reeves tells the CBI conference she is "not coming back with more borrowing or more taxes". An online petition calling for another general election reaches two million signatures, the third largest since 2010; in response, Starmer says he is "not that surprised" that people who did not vote for Labour would want an election re-run. South Wales politicians, including MP Sir Chris Bryant and MS Heledd Fychan, have criticised what they describe as a lack of preparation and insufficient warnings ahead of the arrival of Storm Bert. The Welsh Government publishes the Levy and Registration bill to allow councils in Wales to raise a tax from visitor accommodation, with the £1.25 per person per night levy expected to be introduced from 2027. 27 November – The UK government announces an overhaul of gambling laws, which will restrict the amount people can bet online with each bet to £5 for those aged over 25 and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. A Parliamentary Commission for Standards investigation is launched into Birmingham Yardley MP and Home Office minister Jess Phillips after she failed to register an interest on time.
In July 2019, Feige announced the Phase Four (2021–2022) slate of films and series at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), including the animated series What If...? (2021–2024). By July 2021, the studio was creating an "animation branch and mini studio", known as Marvel Studios Animation, to focus on more animated content. Alonso said Marvel had around 31 projects in various stages of development by September 2021. In April 2022, Feige said he and Marvel Studios were on a creative retreat to plan and discuss the MCU films for the following 10 years. Following comments that there was no clear plan for the franchise in Phase Four compared to the Infinity Saga, Feige announced at SDCC in July 2022 that Phases Four, Five (2023–2025), and Six (2025–2027) would collectively be known as "The Multiverse Saga", and would culminate in the films Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Marvel Studios decided to not have an Avengers crossover film in each phase due to the large expansion in the number of MCU projects in a short amount of time, and after the "creative experience" of ending the Infinity Saga with Infinity War and Endgame. The studio was excited to explore Kang the Conqueror as an overarching villain of the Multiverse Saga after Thanos in the Infinity Saga, because Kang was a different villain in part due to his multiple alternate universe variants from different timelines within the multiverse.

In 1997, Roberts and Szostak showed that fusions between a synthetic mRNA and its encoded myc epitope could be enriched from a pool of random sequence mRNA-peptide fusions by immunoprecipitation. Nine years later, Fukuda and colleagues chose mRNA display method for in vitro evolution of single-chain Fv (scFv) antibody fragments. They selected six different scFv mutants with five consensus mutations. However, kinetic analysis of these mutants showed that their antigen-specificity remained similar to that of the wild type. However, they have demonstrated that two of the five consensus mutations were within the complementarity determining regions (CDRs). And they concluded that mRNA display has the potential for rapid artificial evolution of high-affinity diagnostic and therapeutic antibodies by optimizing their CDRs. Roberts and coworkers have demonstrated that unnatural peptide oligomers consisting of an N-substituted amino acid can be synthesized as mRNA-peptide fusions. N-substituted amino acid-containing peptides have been associated with good proteolytic stability and improved pharmacokinetic properties. This work indicates that mRNA display technology has the potential for selecting drug-like peptides for therapeutic usage resistant to proteolysis.
Approximately 0.2 to 1% of people have a "weak D" phenotype, meaning that they are positive for the RhD antigen, but exhibit weak or negative reactions with some anti-RhD reagents due to decreased antigen expression or atypical variants of antigen structure. If routine serologic testing for RhD results in a score of 2+ or less, the antiglobulin test can be used to demonstrate the presence of RhD. Weak D testing is also performed on blood donors who initially type as RhD negative. Historically, blood donors with weak D were treated as Rh positive and patients with weak D were treated as Rh negative in order to avoid potential exposure to incompatible blood. Genotyping is increasingly used to determine the molecular basis of weak D phenotypes, as this determines whether or not individuals with weak D can produce antibodies against RhD or sensitize others to the RhD antigen.
Firstly, the hydroxylation of compounds begins by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Secondly, hydrophilic moieties join up to the compounds in order to increase water solubility. As a result, the excretion through urine occurs and compounds can be removed. Either CYP4A or CYP4F are the enzymes involved in the downstream metabolism of 1-deoxySLs. It is not yet known which one takes place in the process but, it is more likely to be CYP4F as in mouse experiments this enzyme is responsible for 1-deoxySLs formation.
=== Cardiac === The collagenous cardiac skeleton, which includes the four heart valve rings, is histologically, elastically and uniquely bound to cardiac muscle. The cardiac skeleton also includes the separating septa of the heart chambers – the interventricular septum and the atrioventricular septum. Collagen contribution to the measure of cardiac performance summarily represents a continuous torsional force opposed to the fluid mechanics of blood pressure emitted from the heart. The collagenous structure that divides the upper chambers of the heart from the lower chambers is an impermeable membrane that excludes both blood and electrical impulses through typical physiological means. With support from collagen, atrial fibrillation never deteriorates to ventricular fibrillation. Collagen is layered in variable densities with smooth muscle mass. The mass, distribution, age, and density of collagen all contribute to the compliance required to move blood back and forth. Individual cardiac valvular leaflets are folded into shape by specialized collagen under variable pressure. Gradual calcium deposition within collagen occurs as a natural function of aging. Calcified points within collagen matrices show contrast in a moving display of blood and muscle, enabling methods of cardiac imaging technology to arrive at ratios essentially stating blood in (cardiac input) and blood out (cardiac output). Pathology of the collagen underpinning of the heart is understood within the category of connective tissue disease.
I wanted Glenn to know, so I went to his bedside and told him. I thought I saw a gleam in his eye, but the next day when I went to visit him he didn't remember seeing me. As a scientist, he had died when he had that stroke. Seaborg died two months later, on 25 February 1999. In March 1999, the same team replaced the 244Pu target with 242Pu to make other flerovium isotopes. Two atoms of flerovium were produced as a result, each alpha-decaying with a half-life of 5.5 s. They were assigned as 287Fl. This activity has not been seen again either, and it is unclear what nucleus was produced. It is possible that it was an isomer 287mFl or from electron capture by 287Fl, leading to 287Nh and 283Rg.

Ultralente insulin was a long-acting form of insulin. It has an onset of 4 to 6 hours, a peak of 14 to 24 hours, and a duration of 28 to 36 hours. Due to its slow onset and long duration, daily shots were used to meet basal insulin needs. Ultralente insulin, along with lente insulin, was discontinued in the US by manufacturers in the mid-2000s. One of the reasons for discontinuation was declining use in favor of NPH insulin and other newer insulin products. The FDA withdrew approval for ultralente insulin products by 2011.
The discord has led some commentators to fear that further confrontations may lead to an all-out Sunni-Shia war. In early 2013, photographs released by the Yemeni government show the United States Navy and Yemen's security forces seizing a class of "either modern Chinese- or Iranian-made" shoulder-fired, heat-seeking anti-aircraft missiles "in their standard packaging", missiles "not publicly known to have been out of state control", raising concerns of Iran's arming of the rebels. In April 2016, the U.S. Navy intercepted a large Iranian arms shipment, seizing thousands of AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and 0.50-caliber machine guns, a shipment described as likely headed to Yemen by the Pentagon. Based on 2019 reporting from The Jerusalem Post, the Houthis have also repeatedly used a drone nearly identical to Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company's Ababil-T drone in strikes against Saudi Arabia. In late October 2023, Israel stated that it had intercepted a "surface-to-surface long-range ballistic missile and two cruise missiles that were fired by the Houthi rebels in Yemen"; per reporting from Axios.com, this "was Israel's first-ever operational use of the Arrow system for intercepting ballistic missiles since the war began". The continuing interceptions and seizures of weapons at sea, attributed to Iranian origins, is a matter tracked by the United States Institute of Peace.
=== Information technology === The last decade has seen a proliferation of information technology use in the planning and conduct of clinical trials. Clinical trial management systems are often used by research sponsors or CROs to help plan and manage the operational aspects of a clinical trial, particularly with respect to investigational sites. Advanced analytics for identifying researchers and research sites with expertise in a given area utilize public and private information about ongoing research. Web-based electronic data capture (EDC) and clinical data management systems are used in a majority of clinical trials to collect case report data from sites, manage its quality and prepare it for analysis. Interactive voice response systems are used by sites to register the enrollment of patients using a phone and to allocate patients to a particular treatment arm (although phones are being increasingly replaced with web-based (IWRS) tools which are sometimes part of the EDC system). While patient-reported outcome were often paper based in the past, measurements are increasingly being collected using web portals or hand-held ePRO (or eDiary) devices, sometimes wireless. Statistical software is used to analyze the collected data and prepare them for regulatory submission. Access to many of these applications are increasingly aggregated in web-based clinical trial portals.
Enzymes are used in the chemical industry and other industrial applications when extremely specific catalysts are required. Enzymes in general are limited in the number of reactions they have evolved to catalyze and also by their lack of stability in organic solvents and at high temperatures. As a consequence, protein engineering is an active area of research and involves attempts to create new enzymes with novel properties, either through rational design or in vitro evolution. These efforts have begun to be successful, and a few enzymes have now been designed "from scratch" to catalyze reactions that do not occur in nature.
==== Distribution ==== Sertraline is highly plasma protein bound (98.5%) across a concentration range of 20 to 500 ng/mL. Despite the high plasma protein binding, sertraline and its metabolite desmethylsertraline at respective tested concentrations of 300 ng/mL and 200 ng/mL were found not to interfere with the plasma protein binding of warfarin and propranolol, two other highly plasma protein-bound drugs.

Animal experiments form the bulk of the published record. Rodent models of tendon, ligament, bone, and gut injury are the most common designs. Controlled human trials are rare, which limits confidence in any clinical claim.
They are best described as working hypotheses. Supporting data come mainly from cell cultures and animal tissue, using markers such as growth factors and inflammatory signals. Confirmatory human studies have not been reported.
Status depends on the country. In some places it is treated as a research chemical available without a prescription, while elsewhere it falls under prescription or controlled rules. It holds no general marketing approval as a therapeutic product.
Lyophilised peptide powders are generally kept frozen or refrigerated, dry, and protected from light. Sealed vials limit moisture uptake and slow hydrolysis. Such guidance comes from general peptide chemistry rather than from stability studies specific to every product.
