Long-term storage of the dry powder is typically described at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, while shorter holding periods may use ordinary refrigeration. Repeated warming and cooling cycles are discouraged because they stress the material and can promote aggregation or loss. Light exposure and residual moisture are both treated as avoidable sources of degradation, and working aliquots are often prepared to limit how many times a container is opened. Sealed vials with a desiccant are the usual container.
Quality assessment rests on two separate questions: whether the chain is the intended one, and how much of the sample is that chain. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is the standard purity measurement, while mass spectrometry confirms identity through the observed molecular mass. Amino acid analysis and sequence verification provide further checks. A reported purity percentage describes the proportion of the sample represented by the main peak, not the amount of peptide by mass, since counter-ions and water make up part of any lyophilized lot.
In its usual supplied form, the peptide is a white to off-white lyophilized powder that dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffers. Powder keeps far longer than solution, so material is normally shipped and stored dry, then dissolved only when needed. Once in solution, the chain is subject to hydrolysis and the liquid supports microbial growth, and practical guidance generally treats the dissolved form as short-lived. Containers should stay sealed and desiccated, because the powder takes up moisture from air.
Outside laboratory supply channels, the peptide is sold as a research chemical, a category that carries no requirement to demonstrate purity, identity, or freedom from contamination. Because it is not an approved medicine, products labeled BPC-157 sit in a regulatory gap in many countries, and actual content may differ from the label. Sports organizations list it among prohibited substances, so its presence in an athlete's sample can produce a doping finding regardless of how the material was obtained.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of fifteen amino acids, written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, whose sequence matches part of a larger protein identified in human gastric juice. That parent protein was described in stomach-secretion research, and the fifteen-residue fragment was named body protection compound, which gives the peptide its common label. Material used in experiments is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than extracted from tissue. The reported molecular weight is about 1419 daltons, and the chain contains several proline residues, a feature that appears in discussions of its resistance to enzymatic breakdown.
Most published findings come from rodent models, where the peptide has been examined in wound-healing, gastrointestinal-lesion, tendon, and vascular-injury preparations. A smaller number of early human studies have been reported, chiefly in inflammatory bowel conditions, but the public record is short and has not led to marketing approval in the United States or the European Union. Reviewers therefore classify the compound as investigational, and whether animal results carry over to people remains an open question rather than a settled one.

Identity and purity are usually assessed with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often paired with mass spectrometry using electrospray or MALDI ionisation. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping by enzymatic digestion provide additional sequence-level confirmation. Purity is commonly reported as an area percentage from a chromatographic trace, and water content can be measured by Karl Fischer titration. Reported masses may differ by tens of daltons between sources because preparations can contain acetate or trifluoroacetate counterions, and such differences are not by themselves evidence of a different peptide.
BPC-157 is normally distributed as a lyophilised powder that ranges from white to off-white in appearance. The peptide dissolves readily in water, normal saline, and common aqueous buffers, and it is poorly soluble in nonpolar solvents such as hexane or vegetable oils. Lyophilised vials take up moisture if left open, which changes the mass of powder in the container and complicates any later weighing. Because the material is handled in small quantities, static and adhesion to glass or plastic can also cause noticeable losses during transfer.
Terminology in the literature is not fully standardised. Papers and product listings use BPC-157, BPC 157, and the longer phrase stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 interchangeably, and synonyms such as bepecin or PL 14736 appear in older or company-linked publications. Purity claims and reported masses can also differ between sources because peptide preparations may include counterions, residual solvents, or bound water. This variability complicates direct comparison of results across studies and makes the exact identity and grade of a given sample worth verifying. Discussions of the compound should therefore specify the source, salt form, and stated purity where those are known.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acid residues, with the sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. Its name derives from body protection compound, a term used for a protein fraction identified in human gastric juice. Researchers in Zagreb first reported the pentadecapeptide in the early 1990s and described it as a stable fragment of that larger protein. The compound is also catalogued as PL 14736 and, in some commercial contexts, as bepecin. Its molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 1419 daltons.
Most published work on BPC-157 consists of preclinical studies, including rodent models of tissue injury, gastrointestinal lesions, and vascular or tendon damage, together with in vitro cell assays. Reviews frequently note that the mechanisms proposed in these papers remain incompletely characterised and that findings have not been confirmed in large randomised human trials. The compound is widely sold as a research chemical rather than a licensed medicine, and labels commonly carry a statement that it is not for human use. Whether any of the reported animal effects translate to humans is an open question rather than an established result.
Identity and purity are usually assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection near 214 nanometers, a wavelength that captures the peptide backbone. The main peak area is reported as a percentage of total peak area, which serves as a conventional purity figure. Mass spectrometry provides an independent check on molecular mass and helps confirm the expected sequence. Additional tests may include amino acid analysis and water content determination. Results are only comparable when the same column, gradient, and detection settings are used.
Peptides are susceptible to hydrolysis, oxidation, and aggregation, and BPC-157 is no exception. The lyophilized powder form is generally more stable than a solution because residual moisture is low and molecular mobility is reduced. Once dissolved, the peptide is exposed to water, oxygen, and trace metal ions that accelerate degradation. Light exposure and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are also commonly cited as sources of loss. These general principles guide most handling recommendations found in supplier documentation.
Standard practice for the solid form is storage at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, kept dry and away from light. Containers are usually sealed with a desiccant to limit moisture uptake. Reconstituted solutions are typically held at two to eight degrees Celsius and used within a short window, because potency can decline over days to weeks depending on the buffer and concentration. Freezing an already dissolved sample may help, though repeated thawing is discouraged. Specific shelf-life claims vary between suppliers and are rarely supported by published stability studies.

The first 16 months of the MD program, the preclerkship phase, consists of fundamental scientific and medical coursework. Multi-semester courses include bioethics and service learning. This is followed by a 12-month clinical phase that includes clerkships and preparation for and completion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1. Clerkships are followed by completion of the USMLE Step 2 exam. The final 18 months of medical school include clinical electives, increased clinical duties, and a research capstone project. In addition to Jacobi and Montefiore hospitals, medical students can train in medical facilities such as the VA Bronx Healthcare System and Bronx Psychiatric Center. Students may also volunteer at the Einstein Community Health Outreach (ECHO) Free Clinic, which provides care to those without health insurance. Founded in 1999, ECHO was the first such clinic in New York City and one of the first in the United States.
As the high electronegativity of fluorine reduces the polarizability of the atom, fluorocarbons are only weakly susceptible to the fleeting dipoles that form the basis of the London dispersion force. As a result, fluorocarbons have low intermolecular attractive forces and are lipophobic in addition to being hydrophobic and non-polar. Reflecting the weak intermolecular forces these compounds exhibit low viscosities when compared to liquids of similar boiling points, low surface tension and low heats of vaporization. The low attractive forces in fluorocarbon liquids make them compressible (low bulk modulus) and able to dissolve gas relatively well. Smaller fluorocarbons are extremely volatile. There are five perfluoroalkane gases: tetrafluoromethane (bp −128 °C), hexafluoroethane (bp −78.2 °C), octafluoropropane (bp −36.5 °C), perfluoro-n-butane (bp −2.2 °C) and perfluoro-iso-butane (bp −1 °C). Nearly all other fluoroalkanes are liquids; the most notable exception is perfluorocyclohexane, which sublimes at 51 °C. Fluorocarbons also have low surface energies and high dielectric strengths.
In addition to providing flexibility and length, the poly dA portion of the linker also allows further purification of the mRNA-peptide fusion due to its high affinity for dT cellulose resin. The mRNA-peptide fusions can be selected over immobilized selection targets for several rounds with increasing stringency. After each round of selection, those library members that stay bound to the immobilized target are PCR amplified, and non-binders are washed off.
A number of analogues are known, with the only other well-known compound to come out of the original 1950s research being clonitazene, which is much weaker than etonitazene (around 3x morphine). More recently since around late 2018 a number of designer analogues have started to appear on illicit markets around the world, with the most prominent compounds being metonitazene, isotonitazene and etazene, though others have continued to appear. Of these analogues, only etonitazene and clonitazene are explicitly listed under UN conventions and so are controlled throughout the world. The rest would only be illegal in countries such as the US, Australia and New Zealand that have laws equivalent to the Federal Analog Act. In the United States Etonitazene is a Schedule I narcotic controlled substance with a DEA ACSCN of 9624 and a 25 gram (7⁄8 oz) manufacturing quota as of 2022.

In May 2016, a study published in the journal Nature determined that HNK, specifically (2S,6S;2R,6R)-HNK, is responsible for the antidepressant-like effects of ketamine in mice; administration of (2R,6R)-HNK demonstrated ketamine-type antidepressant-like effects, and preventing the metabolic conversion of ketamine into HNK blocked the antidepressant-like effects of the parent compound. As (2R,6R)-HNK, unlike ketamine, does not antagonize the NMDA receptor to a clinically relevant degree, and produces no dissociative or euphoric effects, it has consequently been concluded that the antidepressant effects of ketamine may in fact not be mediated via the NMDA receptor. This is tentative, as confirmation that the findings translate to humans is still needed, but it is notable that published human data show a positive association between the antidepressant responses of ketamine and plasma (2S,6S;2R,6R)-HNK levels. In accordance with the notion that the NMDA receptor is not responsible for the antidepressant effects of ketamine, dizocilpine (MK-801), which binds to and blocks the same site on the NMDA receptor that ketamine does, lacks antidepressant-like effects. Moreover, the findings would explain why other NMDA receptor antagonists such as memantine, lanicemine, and traxoprodil have thus far failed to demonstrate ketamine-like antidepressant effects in human clinical trials. Instead of acting via blockade of the NMDA receptor, (2R,6R)-HNK increases activation of the AMPA receptor via a currently unknown/uncertain mechanism.

There may be flocculation in some gels, which may produce an unstable gel. The rheology of some gels are easily altered by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity, resulting in stricter storage requirements. Syneresis of the gel may occur during storage, causing the gel to shrink unpredictably or even dry out. The gelators may precipitate and salt out, and some drugs may degrade in gel formulation due to the other ingredients present in the formulation. Some additives and gelators added into the formulation may cause irritation problems, such as skin irritation, dermatitis or allergic conditions. The increased water content in gels increases the chances of bacterial or fungal attack, which may contaminate the gel, making it unsuitable for use. Considering the direct route of administration, drugs must be very small in size to have an effective plasma concentration for action. The particle size and other properties of the drug may also affect its absorption through the skin barrier, resulting in an unreliable effect.
He made a conclusion that "a natural food such as milk must therefore contain, besides these known principal ingredients, small quantities of unknown substances essential to life." However, his conclusions were rejected by his advisor, Gustav von Bunge. A similar result by Cornelis Adrianus Pekelharing appeared in Dutch medical journal Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde in 1905, but it was not widely reported. In East Asia, where polished white rice was the common staple food of the middle class, beriberi resulting from lack of vitamin B1 was endemic. In 1884, Takaki Kanehiro, a British-trained medical doctor of the Imperial Japanese Navy, observed that beriberi was endemic among low-ranking crew who often ate nothing but rice, but not among officers who consumed a Western-style diet. With the support of the Japanese navy, he experimented using crews of two battleships; one crew was fed only white rice, while the other was fed a diet of meat, fish, barley, rice, and beans. The group that ate only white rice documented 161 crew members with beriberi and 25 deaths, while the latter group had only 14 cases of beriberi and no deaths. This convinced Takaki and the Japanese Navy that diet was the cause of beriberi, but they mistakenly believed that sufficient amounts of protein prevented it. That diseases could result from some dietary deficiencies was further investigated by Christiaan Eijkman, who in 1897 discovered that feeding unpolished rice instead of the polished variety to chickens helped to prevent a kind of polyneuritis that was the equivalent of beriberi.

Stargirl and her team were briefly introduced in the Arrowverse crossover "Crisis on Infinite Earths" in January 2020, through archive footage from "The Justice Society" episode. Stargirl is set on a new Earth-2, created during the crossover. Stargirl from the pre-Crisis Earth-1 had previously appeared in three episodes of season two of Legends of Tomorrow, portrayed by Sarah Grey, between October 2016 and February 2017. Regarding any proper crossovers with the Arrowverse, Johns and Bassinger were keen on the idea. Johns said that "right now the main concern is making sure that this show is great, that these characters are great, that they have their own stories and they get the proper screen time and the proper episodes to develop on their own. So hopefully in the future we can do something fun, but the first season is all about making sure that Stargirl is the best show it can possibly be". Bassinger added that there had already been preliminary discussion about crossing over with The Flash, and she was hopeful to be able to crossover with Melissa Benoist on Supergirl. John Wesley Shipp reprised his role as an alternate version of Jay Garrick from The Flash. Johns said Shipp's appearance helped connect "our universe directly with the other shows, and also shows that were part of a grander universe. It opens up the door to opportunities for us to eventually interact with those Arrowverse characters, and that was important".
== Mating == Researchers examined whether female beetles preferred males infected by the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta as mates, or noninfected males. Virgin females were found to spend more time near — and to copulate more often with — noninfected males in the experiment. Mating behavior was also found to be influenced by the mass of the male beetle. A larger male was preferred and mated with first compared to a smaller male mate. Overall, female beetles showed mating preferences for noninfected males who were larger in size. One explanation provided by researchers for this finding is that larger, noninfected males may allow females to gain genetic or material benefits.

The dry powder is the stable form and the dissolved form is comparatively fragile. Freezing a solution slows degradation but does not stop it, and repeated freezing and thawing adds further stress. Many laboratories therefore prepare small single-use portions rather than storing one large volume.
It describes the share of the chromatographic signal belonging to the main peak, not the mass fraction of peptide in the vial. Water, counter-ions such as acetate or trifluoroacetate, and residual solvents account for part of the weight of a lyophilized lot. Peptide content by mass is a separate measurement and is often reported alongside purity.
Mass spectrometry is the primary check, because the measured mass can be compared with the expected value for the fifteen-residue chain. Sequence analysis or amino acid composition provides an independent confirmation. Purity testing alone does not establish identity, since a mixture of unrelated short peptides can still produce a clean-looking chromatogram.
It is not approved for human use in the United States or the European Union. Clinical material has been studied in a small number of early trials, mainly for inflammatory bowel conditions, and the compound remains investigational. Regulators treat marketed products as unapproved rather than as authorized drugs.
